LONDON, Jan 17 (Reuters) – Princess Kate, wife of heir to the throne Prince William, has successfully undergone planned abdominal surgery, according to royal officials on Wednesday. The 42-year-old princess was admitted to the private London Clinic on Tuesday and is expected to remain hospitalized for 10 to 14 days. Although details of the surgery were not disclosed, a palace spokesman assured that the condition was non-cancerous.
In a statement, Kensington Palace emphasized Kate’s desire for privacy regarding her medical information, expressing her hope for understanding from the public. The statement read, “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.”
Shortly after this announcement, Buckingham Palace disclosed that King Charles, 75, would undergo a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate next week. The palace assured the public that the king’s condition was benign and, in a statement, said, “In common with thousands of men each year, the king has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate.”
Both Princess Kate and King Charles were last seen in public on Christmas Day during the royal family’s annual church service near King Charles’ Sandringham home. Kensington Palace indicated that updates on Kate’s recovery would only be provided when there is “significant new information to share.” On medical advice, she is not expected to return to public duties until after Easter, prompting Prince William to postpone several engagements.
